Kirchner faces lifetime ban from politics after fraud conviction
Argentina’s Supreme Court upheld a fraud conviction against former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, sentencing her to six years in prison and a lifetime ban from holding public office, Bloomberg reported on June 10.
Kirchner was found guilty of bribery in 2022 but avoided prison due to her immunity as Argentina’s vice president at the time.
The conviction was affirmed in 2024 after an appeal, and she exhausted all legal options, leaving the Supreme Court as her final recourse.
Kirchner, 72, called the ruling “politically motivated” and told supporters that her opponents fear her party as the only viable alternative should President Javier Milei’s government collapse.
Local media reported she must appear in court within five working days, though Bloomberg noted she is likely eligible for house arrest due to her age, making imprisonment unlikely.
Despite the verdict, Kirchner remains a prominent opposition leader, though recent polls show only 33% of Argentines view her favorably.
Kirchner served as president from 2007 to 2015, and though her party lost to Milei in the last election, she continues to lead the opposition.
Kirchner has consistently denied the bribery charges, labeling them a “political maneuver” by rivals and the judiciary.
