Ukrainian Lieutenant General discusses battles near Chasiv Yar and Toretsk - video

The Charity Foundation "Safe skies over Ukraine" founder, Armed Forces General Staff former Deputy Chief, Lieutenant General Ihor Romanenko, told Radio NV about the situation near Chasiv Yar, where Ukrainian forces have withdrawn from the Kanal district, as well as the ongoing battles near Toretsk.
"The enemy is slowly but advancing on the eastern front," Romanenko said.
"Hostilities intensified near Kupyansk, Lyman, Chasiv Yar, near Pokrov and Vuhledar. They are increasing the intensity of hostilities, and most importantly, they are advancing," Romanenko said.
"They tried all strategies in Chasiv Yar - both frontal attacks that did not help them, primarily in Kanal district, and attempts to approach the city from the northern flank near Kalynyvka, from the southern near Ivanivske, but did not reach their goal. So they used a well-known approach - throwing bombs, artillery, destroy [everything], they also have drones, and then force infantry to move forward, which they did."
The Armed Forces face difficult situation, he noted.
"Therefore, in these conditions, we have to take new positions (the main part of Chasiv Yar is on the hills), and holding on to them."
The invaders advanced near Toretsk as well, Romanenko said.
"They used, you can evaluate it in different ways, a rotational matter. One way or another, they advanced actively near Toretsk and approached the city itself, and fighting broke out on the city outskirts, as they say. <...> They still have resources, but, let's say, it is not yet clear what armies they are preparing, divisions, brigades that have been announced."
Russian forces are increasing the pace of their offensive operations in Donetsk Oblast, surging the attacks intensity in the Toretsk-Horlivka direction, where the invaders were generally inactive throughout 2024, ISW reported on June 23.
The line of the active front increased in the east, Syrskyi said on July 2.
Some directions anyway witness lower hostilities' intensity.
Should the Russian troops manage to capture Chasiv Yar, they will launch an offensive on Kostyantynivka, Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk, and Sloviansk, the Ukrainian military said.
