Rubio: All NATO states back Trump’s 5% defense push
All NATO members "will have agreed on a goal" of spending the equivalent of 5% of their GDP on defense over the next decade by the next NATO Summit in June, U.S. State Secretary Marco Rubio told Fox News on May 15, according to Reuters.
He credited President Donald Trump for pushing back against other NATO members during his first term at the 2018 summit, calling it "one of the most important moments in NATO history."
There have been a significant improvements since then.
"And I can tell you we are headed for a summit in six weeks in which virtually every member of NATO will be at or above 2%," he said.
"But more importantly, many of them will be over 4% and all will have agreed on a goal of reaching 5% over the next decade."
On May 2, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte proposed that alliance members raise defense spending to 3.5% of GDP and earmark an additional 1.5% for "broader security measures" to meet Trump's demands.
