Trump jumps in for Orbán as Hungary nears its toughest election in years

President Donald Trump urged Hungarians to vote for Prime
Minister Viktor Orbán ahead of the country’s parliamentary election, calling
him a “true friend, fighter, and winner” in a Truth
Social endorsement.
Trump described Orbán as “a truly strong and powerful
Leader” with “a proven track record of delivering phenomenal results.”
“He fights tirelessly for, and loves, his Great Country and
People, just like I do for the United States of America,” Trump wrote.
Trump said Orbán had worked to “Protect Hungary, Grow the
Economy, Create Jobs, Promote Trade, Stop Illegal Immigration, and Ensure LAW
AND ORDER!”
He also said relations between Hungary and the United States
had reached “new heights of cooperation and spectacular achievement” under his
administration, “thanks largely to Prime Minister Orbán.”
Trump said he looked forward to continuing to work with
Orbán so the two countries could continue on what he called a “tremendous path”
of success and cooperation.
He added that he had been “proud” to endorse Orbán for
reelection in 2022 and was “honored” to do so again.
“Election Day is Sunday, April 12, 2026. Hungary: GET OUT
AND VOTE FOR VIKTOR ORBÁN,” Trump wrote.
“He is a true friend, fighter, and WINNER, and has my
Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election as Prime Minister of Hungary —
VIKTOR ORBÁN WILL NEVER LET THE GREAT PEOPLE OF HUNGARY DOWN. I AM WITH HIM ALL
THE WAY!”
On April 7, days before the election, Trump offered his
strongest backing yet for Orbán during a phone call to a rally in Budapest.
Also on April 7, Vice President JD Vance said during a news
conference with Orbán that “there are elements in Ukraine’s special services
that are trying to influence the results of American and Hungarian elections.”
Vance traveled to Hungary to support Orbán ahead of the
parliamentary vote on April 12.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry later said it was “not
exaggerating” the significance of Vance’s remark. It added that journalists at
the news conference had “systematically tried to provoke” the U.S. vice
president into making harsher statements, while Vance had almost always
“responded neutrally.”
Hungary’s parliamentary election on April 12 is widely seen
as Orbán’s toughest political test since coming to power in 2010. Polls show
the opposition Tisza party ahead of Orbán’s ruling Fidesz party.
