Turkey summons Ukrainian ambassador over attacks on two vessels in Black Sea

Turkey's Foreign Ministry summoned Ukrainian Ambassador to Ankara Nariman Dzhelyal after attacks on two vessels linked to Turkish operators in the Black Sea, Al Jazeera reported on Aug. 30.
The incident occurred near the Russian port of Tuapse.
On Aug. 26, the cargo ship Lider Bordo Mavi was attacked by at least three drones, injuring five crew members and setting the vessel on fire. According to Daily Sabah, the Cameroon-flagged vessel is operated by a Turkish company and was carrying fresh produce after departing the Turkish port of Samsun.
The following day, a drone attacked another vessel, the Lider Kocatepe, which had been sent to assist the damaged ship. It was forced to return to Samsun.
Ambassador Celal was summoned to the ministry on Aug. 29.
“During the meeting, Turkey stressed the absolute necessity of ensuring the safety of people, property, navigation and the environment in the Black Sea,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The statement did not directly identify who was responsible for the attacks. However, the decision to summon the Ukrainian ambassador rather than the Russian ambassador indicates Turkey’s assessment of the situation.
In July, Turkey sharply reduced oil purchases from Russian ports and plans to cut imports further in August. The main reason was disruptions to Black Sea exports caused by Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian terminals in Oblast.
