Volyn tragedy: Ukraine allows Poland to conduct exhumations in Lviv
Ukraine has granted Poland permission to carry out
exhumation work on Polish soldiers killed in 1939 and buried within the city of
Lviv, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine announced
on June 11.
The ministry emphasized that Ukraine remains open to
continuing search and exhumation efforts within the framework of the
Ukrainian-Polish Historical Issues Working Group.
Officials recalled that the first step in this process was
the successful completion of exhumations in the former village of Puzhnyky in
Ternopil Oblast.
Ukraine has also received permission from the Polish side to
conduct search and exhumation work in the village of Yurechkova in Poland. The
ministry said it expects work there to begin soon.
“We are convinced that shared remembrance and mutual steps
toward each other will unite our nations in the name of our common European
future,” the ministry stated.
Earlier, reports circulated on Polish social media claiming
that Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture and Information Policy had suspended
exhumation work in the village of Sadove in Ternopil Oblast. Minister Mykola
Tochytskyi denied these claims, saying the information was false.
The exhumation of Polish victims in Sadove began on April
24, carried out by a joint Polish-Ukrainian research team that included
forensic experts, archaeologists, geneticists, and anthropologists.
The excavation concluded on May 7. During the exhumation,
the remains of 42 people were recovered. DNA testing will be conducted in
Poland.
