Ukraine not pursuing nuclear rearmament — Foreign Ministry

Commenting to a recent article by The Times, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi stated on Nov. 13 that Kyiv is not developing or planning to create a nuclear bomb.
The Times suggested Ukraine could potentially develop a basic nuclear bomb using plutonium if Donald Trump were to cut U.S. military aid to Ukraine. According to the publication, the creation of the bomb could take several months.
The report cited an analytical note prepared for Ukraine's Defense Ministry. Tykhyi emphasized that Ukraine adheres to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
“We do not possess, develop, or intend to create nuclear weapons,” the spokesperson said.
“Ukraine closely cooperates with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and is fully transparent for its monitoring, which rules out the use of nuclear materials [from its nuclear power plants] for military purposes.”
On Oct. 17, the German tabloid Bild claimed that Ukraine could restore its nuclear arsenal “within weeks.”
