20+ allied countries sign new agreement to support Kyiv at NATO summit
Allied countries leaders signed the Ukraine Compact — a document containing commitments to support Ukraine following NATO summit results, the European Commission reported in its statement on July 11.
The document unites countries that have signed bilateral security agreements with Ukraine "into a single, coordinated and comprehensive architecture to support Kyiv."
Ukraine signed Ukraine Compact with the leaders of the USA, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the UK, together with European Council and European Commission Presidents.
The agreement united 21 countries and the EU in support of Ukraine.
Basic Ukraine Compact provisions
The agreement ensures the goals specified in the bilateral agreements of Ukraine implementation. The signatories undertake to support Ukraine in defense by providing military equipment, finances and training the Ukrainian soldiers.
This includes working in the framework of:
- Contact Group on Ukrainian Defense
- A coalition of possibilities
- Security Support and Training Command for Ukraine
- The EU mission to provide military aid to Ukraine.
The agreement also aims to boost assistance to the Ukrainian Defense Forces until 2027, with the prospect of extension into the 2030s. Every six months the Contact Group on Ukrainian Defense will convene at the ministerial level to review and approve the development roadmap.
In the event of a new Russian attack on Ukraine when the ongoing war is finished, the signatory countries are obliged to quickly meet at the highest level to determine further steps to support Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the signing of the agreement a success for Ukraine "because it develops our security architecture."
"We will definitely fulfill every point - we have enough energy for this," he said.
Last year at the NATO summit in Vilnius "we took a very decisive step by adopting the G7 declaration on the Ukraine security," he added.
"We didn't waste time. We have a robust security assurance architecture. With the Ukraine Compact, we are taking our relations to a new level, marking a significant achievement for Ukraine and all of us."
Zelenskyy thanked US President Joe Biden for his leadership and efforts aimed at ensuring that security cooperation is comprised with decisive actions.
