Ukraine’s Health Ministry to audit Kyiv military medical commissions

In response to a surge of complaints from
the public, Ukraine’s Health Ministry has established a dedicated task force to
audit the work of military
medical commissions (MMCs) in Kyiv, Health Minister Viktor Liashko
announced via Facebook on March 4.
According to Liashko, a lot of complaints cited the neglect of electronic queuing systems and inadequate conditions at the facilities where military medical evaluations were taking place.
"This is fundamentally a matter of respect for our citizens," said Liashko.
He noted out that many MMCs are still based in military recruitment centers, despite the government allowing civilian hospitals to be used by the military for medical examinations.
Furthermore, the minister said the task force will seek to root out corrupt practices, such as bribery being used to distort MMC’s conclusions and grant illegal draft deferments on health grounds.
“Intolerable instances of doctors issuing false diagnoses or soliciting bribes for legitimate ones must be eradicated,” said Liashko.
“Every infraction will be duly examined by law enforcement.”
