Ukraine’s SBU security service has exposed two Russian spies who were trying to recruit an agent at a defense plant in the capital city of Kyiv, the agency reported on Telegram on May 30.
Col. Dmitry Gulii, an officer of the Russian Defense Ministry’s Main Directorate of International Military Cooperation, was named as one of the spies.
Another one, Vitaly Tekhtelev, serves as Deputy Director of the Russian Economy Ministry’s Legal Department.
According to the investigation, the spies remotely recruited a resident of Kyiv at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The man was tasked to get a job in one of Kyiv’s defense companies to collect and transmit intelligence to the Russian invaders.
In this way, the spies tried to get classified information about the Ukrainian weapons that are being delivered to the Defense Forces at the front, the SBU said.
The perpetrators were also interested in the results of Russian missile strikes on Kyiv’s critical infrastructure.
The agent was detained in early 2023 and charged with treason. He exposed his Russian supervisors who had allegedly promised him benefits if the Russians captured the Ukrainian capital city.
The Russians have also been charged under Part 2 of Art. 28 and Part 1 of Art. 114 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (espionage committed by a group of persons in a prior conspiracy).
