Ukraine to create Marine Corps, with several brigades of modern weapons – Zelenskyy
On a visit to Ukrainian frontline marines to mark Marine Corps Day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the creation of a new Marine Corps of brigades equipped with modern weapons and technology, according to a statement on the president’s official website.
Zelenskyy made this announcement while visiting the forward defense positions in the area between Vuhledar and Maryinka in Donetsk Oblast. He congratulated the marines on their holiday and presented them with awards.
“Every day, on the battlefield, the Ukrainian Marine Corps proves that it is a powerful force that destroys the enemy, liberates Ukrainian territories, and accomplishes the most challenging tasks under the most difficult conditions.”
“We need more of such strength. Therefore, starting today, we are significantly increasing the potential of the marines and establishing a Marine Corps,” the president stated.
Ukrainian marines have been actively engaged in combat missions in the most challenging defensive areas of Ukraine, primarily in the southern regions, since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in Feb. 2022.
Yuriy Sodol, the Commander of the Marine Corps of the Ukrainian Naval Forces, has advised Russian military personnel to either flee or surrender, promising that Ukrainian marines will continue to destroy the occupiers “methodically, systematically, every day.”
