The Ukrainian command is making the right decisions at
the front amid the ongoing counter-offensive, the Ukrinform news agency quoted NATO Secretary
General Jens Stoltenberg as saying on June 20.
Ukrainian forces are making progress, he said at a joint briefing with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius at Air Base Jagel in northern Germany.
Stoltenberg noted the fighting is very heavy due to the Russians’ fierce resistance, who are mounting a competent defense However, the Ukrainian command is making the right operational decisions, according to him.
Ukraine needs constant support for its counter-offensive to liberate the territory and improve its negotiating position in the future, the official added.
Stoltenberg also confirmed that Ukrainian pilots had started training on modern fighter jets and thanked the countries that joined this initiative. He believes this is a sign of NATO’s readiness to support Ukraine in the long term.
At the same time, the decision on the timing of the transfer of fighter jets to the Armed Forces of Ukraine has not yet been made, Stoltenberg added.
Ukraine’s General Staff earlier reported that Ukrainian forces were successful in limited counter-offensive actions in Berdyansk and Melitopol areas.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also confirmed that Ukrainian forces had not lost any positions, but, on the contrary, had liberated several settlements.
The counter-offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is underway in several areas, Ukrainian Deputy Minister Hanna Maliar announced on June 15.
