Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had an emergency phone call on Oct. 8 with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who briefed him on the actions of the military and law enforcement in the country, Zelenskyy said on Telegram.
Ukrainian diplomats and Israeli police are cooperating on the protection of Ukrainian citizens, he said.
The politicians also discussed the impact of the situation in Israel on security both within the region and beyond.
“We stand in solidarity with Israel, which is suffering from a bold and large-scale attack, and we extend our condolences for the numerous casualties,” said Zelenskyy.
In addition to Zelenskyy, Netanyahu held discussions with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who they all expressed “unreserved support for Israel’s right to defend itself as necessary,” Netanyahu said.
Militants from the Iranian-backed Palestinian group Hamas launched a massive rocket attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip on Oct. 7, firing approximately 5,000 rockets. Hundreds of armed Hamas militants also infiltrated Israeli territory from the southern border.
Israeli authorities declared Operation Iron Sword. By evening, Israeli forces had regained control of cities in the south that had been infiltrated by Hamas fighters. Israel also conducted airstrikes on Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip.
As of midday on Oct. 8, it was reported that over 600 people had died because of the extensive Hamas rocket attack and subsequent shelling of Israel. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry confirmed the deaths of two Ukrainians.
Israel’s Security Cabinet voted in favor of implementing Article 40 Aleph, which signifies an official declaration of war. The last time it was invoked was in 1973.
