U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had his
first phone conversation with Ukraine's new Defense
Minister Rustem Umerov, the Pentagon's press service and Umerov himself
reported on Sept. 11.
Austin congratulated Umerov on his new position, reaffirming Washington’s unwavering support for Ukraine.
Secretary Austin also relayed updated information on U.S. efforts related to providing security aid. He also exchanged thoughts with Umerov on priorities concerning Ukraine's immediate battlefield needs, as well as those required for long-term planning.
The ministers discussed the agenda for the next week’s Ramstein meeting — a monthly gathering of defense ministers of Kyiv’s international allies.
The Ukrainian minister informed his U.S. counterpart about recent developments on the frontlines. Both officials vowed to maintain close contact.
The Ukrainian parliament appointed Umerov as the defense minister on Sept. 6, having dismissed Oleksii Reznikov from the position the day before. Reznikov served in the post since November 2022, while Umerov previously managed the State Property Fund.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
