US announces $300 million security assistance package for Ukraine
The U.S. Department of Defense announced a
$300 million military
aid package for Ukraine on May 3. The package includes howitzers, artillery
rounds, and HIMARS ammunition, among other things.
According to the message on the Pentagon's website, the package includes the following items:
· Additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS);
· 155mm Howitzers;
· 155mm artillery rounds;
· 120mm, 81mm, and 60mm mortar rounds;
· Tube-Launched, Optically-Tracked, Wire-Guided (TOW) anti-tank missiles;
· AT-4 and Carl Gustaf anti-armor weapon systems;
· Hydra-70 aircraft rockets;
· Small arms and small arms ammunition;
· Demolition munitions for obstacle clearing;
· Spare parts and other field equipment.
This is the 37th military aid package Washington provided to Ukraine since August 2021.
Hydra-70 is a 70mm unguided air-to-ground rocket, compatible with a variety of warheads: cumulative charge, fragmentation, and flechette darts. Ukrainian forces already use a high-precision version of these rockets, known as APKWS.
On April 19, the U.S. government rolled out a $325 million military aid package for Ukraine, which included HIMARS and artillery ammunition, TOW missiles, high-precision aviation munitions, and other items.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
