US had no warning of Ukraine’s operation in Kursk Oblast
Kyiv did not give Washington advance warning of its cross-border incursion into Russia’s Kursk Oblast, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said during a briefing on Aug. 7.
“Russia violated Ukraine's territorial integrity... and continues to illegally occupy Ukrainian territory,” said Miller.
“The decision on how Ukraine conducts military operations is up to Ukraine, and our policy regarding cross-border strikes has not changed.”
He clarified that the United States did not receive information about the operation in Kursk Oblast in advance. Nevertheless, Miller said that "Ukraine's current actions do not violate U.S. policy."
“It is not unusual for the Ukrainian side not to warn us in advance about its tactics... Ukraine makes its own decisions,” the official concluded.
Earlier, the White House said it would reach out to Ukraine to “clarify the situation” in Kursk Oblast. John Kirby, White House National Security Council spokesperson, stated that “Ukrainian operations should be commented on by the Ukrainian side, and our task is to provide assistance to Ukraine.”
The European Commission similarly said that Ukraine advancing into Russia’s sovereign territory is entirely legitimate in a defensive war.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
