US, Ukraine still discussing ultimate goals of Kursk operation — Pentagon

U.S. and Ukrainian officials are still discussing the long-term goals of the ongoing operation in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder said at a press briefing on Aug. 20.
Ryder added that the Kursk incursion has already showcased “the ingenuity and valor of Ukrainians.”
Responding to questions related to the operation, he referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy describing the push into Kursk Oblast as an effort to establish a “buffer zone” between Ukrainian cities and Russian troops.
“We continue discussions with the Ukrainians regarding their focus,” Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne quoted Ryder.
“You heard President Zelenskyy say it was to create a buffer zone, so we are having these discussions to learn more about their objectives.”
According to him, the United States remains focused on ensuring that Ukraine remains a free and sovereign country capable of deterring future Russian aggression.
“Regarding their operation in Kursk [Oblast], as I mentioned, they have clearly forced the Russians into a response,” Ryder added.
At the same time, the United States appears to remain unresponsive to Kyiv’s requests to allow the use of ATACMS ballistic missile against strikes deep into Russian territory.
“Our policy remains unchanged regarding the use of long-range strike capabilities for deep strikes,” the official said on the subject.
“As we have said, conducting defensive operations across the border is permissible. And I will leave it at that.”
