US Vice President Vance travels to Hungary days before parliamentary vote

U.S. Vice President JD Vance arrived in Hungary and said he “looks forward to meeting his good friend,” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, journalist Alex Raufoglu reported on X on April 7.
The visit comes just days before Hungary’s parliamentary elections scheduled for April 12.
“We will discuss many issues related to U.S.-Hungary relations. Of course, Europe, Ukraine, and other topics will play a significant role,” Vance said, as cited by Raufoglu.
Vance is also expected to attend a rally in Budapest on April 7 marking Hungarian-American Friendship Day, local media previously reported. Orbán is set to host the event, followed by a joint press conference with Vance.
Afterward, Orbán is scheduled to hold a major campaign rally at MTK Sportpark, where Vance is also expected to appear.
Earlier, Reuters reported the planned visit, citing sources. The trip is intended to signal support for Orbán, who is trailing his opponent in most opinion polls ahead of the election.
U.S. President Donald Trump previously expressed “full support” for Orbán on March 25 and urged Hungarian voters to back him in the upcoming parliamentary vote.
Polling data cited by Reuters on April 1 showed the opposition party Tisza Party widening its lead over Orbán’s ruling Fidesz ahead of the election.
