Rain can’t stop Ukrainian athletes’ joy at Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony – video

A torrential downpour that forced spectators to take cover and athletes to don raincoats during the more than three-hour opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on July 26 did not dampen the spirits of Ukrainian fencers Olha Kharlan and Olena Kravatska.
A video of them breaking out into a dance after the ceremony was posted on Instagram by Summer Sports Ukraine.
The spectacular opening ceremony took place in Paris on the night of July 27, with an armada of boats carrying athletes from around the world along the Seine River. It became the largest open-air show in the world, with more than 300,000 people watching from the riverbanks and bridges.
Tennis star Elina Svitolina, who won a bronze medal at the previous Games in Tokyo, was one of the flag-bearers for Ukraine at the ceremony.
Svitolina was joined by swimmer Mykhailo Romanchuk, a silver and bronze medalist at the 2020 Olympics, according to the press service of the Ukrainian National Olympic Committee.
Organizers point out that the 2024 Olympics will be the first in history to achieve gender balance, with 50% of participants being women and 50% men.
The ceremony will also be remembered for a few mishaps, including the raising of the Olympic flag upside down after French President Emmanuel Macron declared the Games open, and the unexpected introduction of the South Korean delegation as North Korean in English and French.
