Cargo ship with Russians aboard sinks in Sea of Azov, drone attack claimed

A cargo ship carrying wheat sank in the Sea of Azov off the Russian-occupied part of Kherson Oblast, with Russian sources claiming it was hit by a drone attack on Apr. 5.
The so-called “governor” of the temporarily occupied part of Kherson Oblast, Volodymyr Saldo, said on Telegram that a Volgo-Balt–type vessel had been involved in an accident.
Nine crew members — all Russian citizens — managed to reach the coast of Kherson Oblast using a lifeboat capsule.
The chief mate, born in 1991, was killed. Two others are missing.
Saldo did not specify the cause of the accident.
Russia’s state news agency TASS, citing a source in emergency services, claimed the cargo vessel was attacked by a drone. The incident reportedly occurred 300 miles north of Russian-occupied Kerch.
According to the outlet, two people were killed.
Of the nine people who reached the shore near the Russian-occupied village of Shchaslyvtseve by lifeboat, one was already dead.
The dry cargo vessel was allegedly attacked in the area of the Arabat Spit near occupied Henichesk, Kommersant reported.
Volgo-Balt is a type of Soviet and Russian river-sea dry cargo vessel designed to transport bulk goods along inland waterways with the ability to operate in coastal sea areas.
