Zaporizhzhia NPP disconnected from power grid
For the first time since the facility became operational, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has been disconnected from Ukraine’s power grid, Ukrainian nuclear energy operator Energoatom said in a Telegram post on Aug. 25.
“The ZNPP is currently receiving power from the Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant,” said the agency.
“All systems are nominal. We’re working to re-establish power grid connection to one of the facility’s reactors.”
Three out of four connecting power lines at the ZNPP had previously been damaged by Russian troops stationed at the power plant.
According to Energoatom, the last remaining connection was briefly disrupted by a fire at the nearby Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant.
The agency previously warned that without external power, ZNPP’s reactor cooling system could rely only on the limited capacity of diesel-powered backup generators. If those fail, then the nuclear plant – the largest in Europe – will be at risk of a meltdown, threatening much of the continent.
