Zelenskyy and Trump agree to meet in person to discuss support for Ukraine and steps towards peace
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a phone conversation with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump overnight on July 19, the Ukrainian leader reported on X.
"I spoke with Donald Trump to congratulate him on the Republican nomination and condemn the shocking assassination attempt in Pennsylvania," he wrote.
“I wished him strength and absolute safety in the future. I noted the vital bipartisan and bicameral American support for protecting our nation's freedom and independence.”
During the conversation, Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine will always be grateful to the United States for its assistance in strengthening its ability to resist Russian terror. The head of state also noted that Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities and villages continue every day.
"We agreed with President Trump to discuss at a personal meeting what steps can make peace fair and truly lasting," Zelenskyy added.
Possible outcomes of the Trump-Biden rivalry
Following Joe Biden's poor performance televised debate with Donald Trump on June 27, a growing number of voices within the Democratic Party are publicly or privately calling for Biden to withdraw from the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Fellow party members are concerned about the current White House head's health, as well as his potential physical and cognitive problems, which could prevent Biden from defeating Trump or continuing to serve as president even if he wins.
Reuters cited sources as saying on July 3 that 81-year-old Biden could be replaced by U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris in the Nov. 5 election. Major Democratic donors believe that it could also be the governors of Michigan or California.
Afterward, Biden firmly stated that he was not going to withdraw from the election and would do so "only if God Almighty came down and said, ‘Joe, get out of the race,’" despite the calls of sponsors and congressmen.
Democratic Senator Michael Bennet said for the first time on July 9 that U.S. President Joe Biden is likely to lose the November election.
Biden said in an interview with NBC News on July 16 that he had no plans to drop out of the election and expressed confidence that he would not lose to Donald Trump.
"I'm old, but I'm only three years older than Trump, number one. And number two, my mental acuity has been pretty damn good," Biden said.
“I've done more in 3.5 years than any president in a long, long time.”
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (84) privately told Biden that, according to polls, he would not be able to defeat Trump in the 2024 presidential election, U.S. media reported on July 17.
