Zelenskyy & Duda seeking to meet but Poland won’t budge on Ukrainian grain, says pres. adviser
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Polish President Andrzej Duda may soon arrange a one-on-one meeting, according to chief advisor to the Polish president, Paweł Szrot, on Sep. 12.
"However, I don’t want to jump the gun because various security considerations are in play. President Zelenskyy is the leader of a country at war and is under the threat of terrorist attacks from Russia," Szrot said.
If the proposed meeting is held, Poland’s embargo on Ukrainian grain imports will likely feature prominently, and Szrot reiterated that President Duda supports the Polish government’s decision to unilaterally extend the ban.
"In pursuit of our national interests, Poland has opted to close its market to Ukrainian grain, citing a lack of demand for this commodity," Szrot said.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has previously stated that regardless of the European Union’s decision regarding Ukrainian agro-imports Poland will not allow an influx of Ukrainian grain across its border.
Ukraine contends that the unilateral extension of the ban violates the rules of the common market, and the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU.
