Ukraine reacts after Google maps expose military sites
Google recently published updated maps revealing Ukrainian military sites, but took corrective action only after a public outcry, said Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation under Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, on Sunday, Nov. 3.
“Google uploads updated images on their maps, which ‘expose’ the locations of our military systems (I won’t specify which ones). We reached out to them to quickly resolve it, but it was the weekend. Not a priority,” Kovalenko explained.
He added that Russian forces quickly began leveraging the Google images showing Ukrainian military sites.
Kovalenko later reported that after the public reaction, Google representatives contacted Ukrainian officials and confirmed they were working on fixing the issue.
He added that Ukraine will further discuss with Google how to address similar issues swiftly in the future.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
