Russia plans to capture Odesa, reach Romanian border — Zelenskyy
The Kremlin still hopes to seize Odesa and push to the Moldovan and Romanian borders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on June 11.
Speaking as the host of Ukraine—Southeastern Europe Summit in Odesa, the president warned that Europe will be less secure if Ukraine or Moldova are allowed to fall under Moscow’s control.
“Once again, we are here in our beautiful city, Odesa,” said Zelenskyy.
“This beautiful city is a target for Russia. They want to destroy it, as they have destroyed countless towns and villages in occupied territories. Russian military plans are aimed at this region—Odesa—and then at the borders with Moldova and Romania.”
He reiterated that European nations need to be making concrete plans for post-war security guarantees for Kyiv. The policy goal of preventing another Russian invasion is a matter of “practical necessity” for Ukraine’s immediate neighbors, the president stated.
Zelenskyy added that Ukraine needs effective deterrence and rapid-response measures, from air defense systems to protection against cyber threats, and called for a review of existing international agreements, military capabilities, and infrastructure to bolster national security.
Romania’s newly elected president, Nicuşor Dan, visited Ukraine for the first time on June 11, attending the summit in Odesa.
Another notable participant is Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, a loose political ally of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. This is the first time Vučić visited Ukraine since Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion.
