Ukrainian SBU detains Russian agent posing as soldier across 10 regions
Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has detained a Russian military intelligence agent in Mykolaiv who posed as a soldier to spy in 10 Ukrainian regions, the SBU reported on Monday, Oct. 28.
The suspect, identified as a 22-year-old resident of Kherson Oblast, reportedly operated in Donetsk, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, and Chernivtsi regions, according to Ukrainian intelligence.
The agent traveled through these areas, attempting to locate air defense sites and gather coordinates of military hospitals and other medical facilities where Ukrainian soldiers were treated, the report stated.
According to the SBU, the occupiers had planned to “evacuate” their agent to Russia and place him with the Wagner Group, where he had hoped to serve.
Officials seized a phone the agent used to send “reports” to contacts within Russia’s GRU military intelligence. The SBU’s counterintelligence team has already identified these contacts.
The agent was apprehended while scouting Ukrainian Armed Forces positions in Mykolaiv. He has been charged with high treason under martial law under Part 2 of Article 111 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code, which could result in life imprisonment with property confiscation. He is currently held in custody without bail, the SBU reported.
