Kyiv blogger summoned to court over ‘Useless UN’ protest
Kyiv blogger Yosyp Husak, who recently attached a poster to UN cars as an act of protest against the organization’s sluggish response to the Russian destruction of the Kakhovka Dam, has received a court summons, he wrote on Twitter on June 20.
“The morning of the next day,” he tweeted on June 7, the day after Russian occupation forces blew the Kakhovka Dam.
“Several off-road vehicles of the UN and WHO, fully ready for travel, are parked at one of Kyiv’s parking lots... No vandalism, just expressing my position. Useless,” he wrote, adding a photo in which “seless” was pasted to the letter U on UN cars.
Husak was charged with committing an act of minor hooliganism. If found guilty, he could face a fine amounting to three to seven untaxed minimal personal incomes, or correctional labor for the period of one to two months with deduction of twenty percent of earnings,
Overnight on June 6, Russian forces, which had occupied the town of Nova Kakhovka for over a year, exploded the Kakhovka Dam and hydropower plant, completely or partially flooding downstream towns and villages along the Dnipro River, including the regional capital of Kherson.
Ukraine began evacuating the population from the government-controlled west bank of Kherson Oblast, while a catastrophe unfolded on the occupied east bank, which suffered considerably more damage due to its lower elevation. Russian forces have refused to conduct evacuations in the territory they occupy, and have prevented international organizations such as the UN from accessing the area.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
