The discussion of military assistance to Ukraine in the Bundestag was marked by laughter following Defense Minister Boris Pistorius’ response regarding Taurus missiles for Ukraine, Bild reported on Feb. 22.
During the meeting, the majority of lawmakers rejected the opposition resolution calling for the transfer of German long-range Taurus missiles to Kyiv.
At the same time, a document from the ruling coalition was approved, mentioning the supply of “additional necessary long-range weapon systems,” but Taurus was not mentioned.
Then, opposition CDU deputy Jurgen Hardt directly asked Pistorius if the deliveries of Taurus were implied.
“Give an answer: yes or no,” Hardt said.
“I have read this document. Its authors will think about it. I am not a member of the (SPD in the Bundestag) faction,” Pistorius said, adding that he cannot answer this question.
The minister’s words provoked laughter among some deputies.
Later, the deputy head of the SPD faction, Gabriela Heinrich, said that this was a matter of interpretation.
According to her, based on the approved document, the supply of Taurus is “not obligatory,” but “no red line has been drawn.”
In September 2023, Pistorius said that Berlin had not refused to transfer Taurus missiles to Ukraine, but was not ready to do so.
The reason could be the wavering of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, as previously reported by the media, he expressed concern that Kyiv could attack Russian territory.
Ukraine has repeatedly stated that it will not use Western long-range missiles to strike Russian territory.
On Jan. 17, the Bundestag did not support a resolution calling for the supply of long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine. Only 178 out of 666 MPs voted in favor.
On Feb. 5, Christian Freuding, head of the Special Staff for Ukraine at the German Ministry of Defense, said that long-range Taurus missiles cannot turn the tide of war in favor of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
