Ukraine and Canada plan to sign major Drone Deal at UN summit

Ukraine expects to sign a bilateral Drone Deal with Canada during the UN General Assembly in New York in late September, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sept. 10.
Ukraine and Canada took the initial procedural step on Sept. 10 toward the finalized pact, which Kyiv intends to sign before the end of the month.
"We signed the initial component, and our negotiating teams reported that we would be able to finalize the Drone Deal within 90 days," Zelenskyy told journalists following negotiations with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
"Mark [Carney-ed.] asked, 'Can we do this in nine days instead?' and the teams responded immediately: 'Yes, absolutely, excellent proposal.' That is precisely why I believe we need to hold meetings where we can achieve even greater results."
Zelenskyy added that in his official visit to Canada, both parties signed a foundational document initiating the co-production of military uncrewed aerial vehicles. Carney further announced Canada’s commitment to scale up its domestic drone manufacturing base, with one-third of all produced systems slated for direct transfer to Ukraine.
"I hope that in New York we will be in a position to finalize this major agreement between our two nations," the Ukrainian president added.
The Drone Deal program is a multi-year defense-technology cooperation framework established between Ukraine and partner states. It represents a vital format through which Ukraine secures long-term annual financing and technological integration for its domestic defense-industrial base.
In late August, Norway became the tenth partner nation to formally join the multinational Drone Deal initiative alongside Ukraine.
