Ukraine military fends off intense multi-front assault, reports 89 clashes on 6 Russian attack axes

Russian troops continue to attack in the Kupyansk, Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, Maryinka, and Zaporizhzhya sectors of the front, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on Dec. 17.

89 combat engagements took place over the last day.
Russia launched four missiles and 72 air strikes, fired 92 times from multiple launch rocket systems at Ukrainian positions and localities. There are dead and wounded among the civilian population.
On Dec. 16, the Russian military attacked Ukraine using 34 Shahed-136/131 UAVs. All suicide drones were destroyed by air defense forces and means.
On the morning of Dec. 17, Russia conducted another air strike using seven Shahed-136/131 UAVs. Ukraine’s air defense destroyed all UAVs.
In the Kupyansk sector, Ukrainian troops repelled 14 Russian attacks near Synkivka, Kharkiv Oblast, and Stelmakhivka, Luhansk Oblast.
In the Lyman sector, the Ukrainian Armed Forces repelled six Russian attacks near Serebryanske forestry in Luhansk Oblast and east of Terny in Donetsk Oblast.
In the Bakhmut sector, Ukrainian defenders repelled 12 Russian attacks near Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiyivka, and Andriyivka in Donetsk Oblast.
In the Avdiivka sector, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the Russian invasion forces who keep trying to encircle Avdiivka. Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled 17 Russian attacks east of Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, Avdiivka, as well as 13 attacks in the areas of Nevelske and Pervomayske in Donetsk Oblast.
In the Maryinka sector, Ukrainian troops continue to hold back Russian forces in the areas of Maryinka, Pobeda, and Novomykhailivka in Donetsk Oblast, where they successfully repelled 12 Russian attacks.
In the Shakhtarsk sector, Russian troops did not conduct any offensive (assault) actions.
In the Zaporizhzhya sector, the Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled 12 Russian attacks west of Novopokrovka and Robotyne in Zaporizhzhya Oblast.
In the Melitopol sector, Ukrainian troops continue to inflict losses in manpower and equipment on Russian forces.
In the Kherson sector, Ukrainian defenders are holding their positions on the left bank of the Dnipro River.
Over the last day, the aviation of the Defense Forces struck 21 Russian clusters of personnel, weapons, and military equipment.
The missile forces hit seven clusters of personnel, weapons, and military equipment, a control center, two air defense facilities, 13 artillery pieces, two ammunition, and fuel and lubricant depots of the Russian military.
Earlier, several Ukrainian marines and soldiers who took part in the crossing of the Dnipro River told the New York Times about the fierce and deadly battles for the bridgehead on Kherson’s left bank.
Ukraine is gathering resources for a new counteroffensive next year. The bridgehead on Kherson’s left bank could become one of the points of offensive operations.
