Netanyahu and Galant face ICC war crime charges, along with Hamas leaders

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is seeking arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Galant, and three Hamas leaders, ICC Chief Prosecutor Kareem Khan announced in a CNN interview on May 20.
The warrants relate to “war crimes and crimes against humanity” in connection with the October 7 attack on Israel and the subsequent war in the Gaza Strip.
The charges against Netanyahu and Gallant include “extermination, starvation as a method of warfare, including the denial of humanitarian aid, and the deliberate targeting of civilians in the course of the conflict,” Khan said.
The request for arrest warrants will now be considered by an ICC panel of judges.
The arrest warrants for Israeli politicians mark the first time the ICC has targeted the top leadership of a close U.S. ally.
The decision puts Netanyahu in a similar position to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, who previously had an ICC arrest warrant issued against him for illegally deporting children from the occupied territories of Ukraine to Russia.
