NATO pledges EUR 40 billion in military aid to Ukraine for 2025
NATO agreed to fund military aid for Ukraine with EUR 40 billion ($43 billion) next year, a Western European diplomat said, Reuters reported on July 3.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg asked member states
to keep up military aid for Ukraine at the same level as in the years since
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, adding up to EUR 40 billion
($43 billion) per year.
NATO leaders will sign off on the pledge next week in
Washington, Reuters said.
NATO Summit in Washington
The 75th anniversary NATO leaders’ summit will be held July
9-11, 2024 in Washington.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed hope for
two key outcomes from the summit in January: the delivery of new air defense
systems and concrete steps toward Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance.
The NATO summit in Vilnius on July 11-12, 2023 saw leaders
of 31 NATO countries participation, along with delegations from Japan, South
Korea, New Zealand, Australia, Ukraine, and Sweden. President Zelenskyy was in
attendance.
Ukraine will become a member of the Alliance without the
Membership Action Plan (MAP) and will receive an invitation once allies agree
and conditions are met, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on July
11.
Stoltenberg invited President Zelenskyy to the NATO summit
in Washington in April but expressed doubts that Ukraine will receive an
invitation to join the organization at this time.
