Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy plan meeting after phone call
The schedules of US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are being coordinated to hold the meeting agreed upon during their telephone conversation on July 19, presidential spokesperson Serhiy Nikiforov said on national television on July 20.
It was "a good conversation in a spirit of mutual respect" during which Trump said his election victory would not benefit Russia.
Zelenskyy urged Trump not to listen to representatives of countries who try to justify the actions of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, calling him as an "ordinary murderer" who has no excuses.
They “talked about yesterday's strike on Mykolaiv, during which, unfortunately, people were killed again. They also discussed and condemned the July 8 attack on Okhmatdyt (children’s hospital in Kyiv)”.
According to Nikiforov a “principal agreement” to arrange a meeting was reached during the conversation, but it is too early to provide further details as the teams need to coordinate schedules and other specifics.
"I spoke with Donald Trump to congratulate him on the Republican nomination and condemn the shocking assassination attempt in Pennsylvania," Zelenskyy wrote on X on July 19 after the conversation with Trump.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Kyiv will always be grateful to the United States for its assistance in strengthening its ability to resist Russian terror. He also noted that Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities and villages continue every day.
"We agreed with President Trump to discuss at a personal meeting what steps can make peace fair and truly lasting."
